Ling 113: Semantics

Course description

This course is an introduction to the linguistic subdiscipline of semantics. After a very brief general introduction to the course and some main semantic concepts that will surface again and again throughout the remainder of this course, we will deal with word meaning and sentence meaning and different theoretical approaches to these two aspects of meaning. Then, we will be concerned with selected aspects of the acquisition of word meaning by children. Finally, we will look at different empirical methods of semantic analysis and a few central notions of pragmatics (or utterance meaning).
